Q: Will professional trainers add cost?
A: JYS will be fundraising to offset some of the training costs. We increased registration for the 2021-2022 season by $30. Currently, we are the only youth sport in Jefferson that does not solicit sponsorship.
Q: What should my child bring to practice?
A: All players should bring a soccer ball (appropriate size for age), wear soccer-specific cleats, shin guards should also be worn and must be covered with socks. You should also bring enough water to stay hydrated during activity. Jewelry and hooded sweatshirts are not permitted.
Q: What day and time will practice be on?
A: For the most part, our volunteer parent coaches chose the day and time of practice around their own schedule. Practices are run for either 60 or 90 minutes between 5pm-8pm, Monday through Friday. The schedule is usually finalized approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of the season. Unfortunately, it is not always possible to assign a team based on when you can/can't practice.
Q: I live in the [Oak Ridge/Lake Hopatcong] side of town, can my child be assigned to a practice there?
A: Teams are mixed with children from both sides of town, and the coaches chose where they practice based on availability for the size of field for the age group. On the LH side, practices are held at Fireman's Field and Camp Jefferson. In the OR side, we use Legion Field, Berkshire Valley Field and Milton School (depending on the season). All Red Bull run sessions are held on the Lake Hopatcong side of town, so at least once per week, your child will practice there.
Q: Can I request my child is placed on a team with friends?
A: The only way to guarantee which team your child is on, is if you volunteer to Head Coach. Otherwise you may request to be on the same team as one friend and we will do our best to accommodate such requests. Recreation teams are different each year, and we try to make them as balanced as possible.
Q: My child really liked a particular coach last year, can we have the same coach again?
A: Any requests for a particular coach will be reviewed by the JYS board when teams are built. It is not always possible to accommodate such requests.
Q: My child is playing in the Rockaway Valley Soccer League, where will we be expected to travel to?
A: The RVSL towns are all within 30 minutes of Jefferson. There will only be 4 away games in a season. The participating towns included Dover, Wharton, Rockaway, Mine Hill, Mount Arlington, Hackettstown, Denville, Parsippany, and Roxbury.
Q: How will I know which team my child is assigned to?
A: Once registration is closed, we begin to build the teams. Coaches are assigned and rosters are sent to the coaches approximately 2-3 weeks prior to the start of the season. You will hear directly from the Coach soon after they receive the team roster, regarding practice times, days and location.
Q: Registration is closed, can I still sign up?
A: Once registration is closed, we order uniforms. Uniforms require a 4-6 week lead time. If we have extra uniforms and space on a roster, you may be able to sign up late. It is determined on a case by case basis. If we need to rush order an additional uniform, late registration is subject to an additional fee of no more than $30.
Q: I want to coach my child's soccer team. What steps do I need to take?
A: Returning coaches (in good standing) are given first refusal. Anyone interested in coaching (returning or new) must register, you can do so at the time of registering your player. You can find out the requirements needed to be met for recreation soccer coaches here.
